Mrs. Juanita Gibson

Born Into Time: November 27, 1929
Born Into Eternity: January 11, 2018

Juanita Gibson was born on November 27, 1929 to William and Mary Thomas, the youngest daughter of 9 children in Franklin, Louisiana, St. Mary’s Parish. Her mother, father, siblings, and husband all preceded her in death.

Juanita moved to Chicago in 1952, where she joined St. Mark United Methodist Church at 50th and Wabash, which later became St. Luke United Methodist Church. It was at St. Mark church that she married Cleveland Gibson, Sr. in 1954. To this union, four children were born.

As a member of St. Luke, Juanita sang in the church choir and continued to sing for the choir once St. Luke closed in 1990 and the congregation merged with Hartzell United Methodist Church, which she was a member of until her death. In addition to a member of the choir, she was also a member of the United Methodist Women’s group.

Affectionately known as Girley to relatives and close friends, Juanita was a very quiet, soft-spoken woman that loved her family and friends dearly. She was an excellent cook, known for her famous gumbo, okra dish, seasoned rice, and homemade praline candies. Juanita loved music and was always extremely hospitable to friends and guests.

She worked for the Chicago Public Schools for 22 years at Phillips High School in food services until she retired 1990.

She leaves to cherish her children; Ruth Omega Gibson, Jamie Montgomery (Donnell Sr.), Cleveland Gibson Jr., Tracy Johnson (James); 4 grandchildren: Donnell Montgomery Jr., Quentin Montgomery, Chelsea Johnson, and Caitlyn Johnson; 3 great-grandchildren: Akayla, Jayden, and Alaina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. She also leaves behind her cousin Sidney Howard, who was also her godson; and Maggie Griffin, her best friend of over 60 years.
