Mr. Kenneth M. Cotton was born on the south side of Chicago, July 25, 1968 to Thomas and the late Lucille Cotton. He was the youngest of two children.
Ken attended Lindblom Technical High School, an environment that fueled his love for learning. Ken was intellectually competitive. His grades put him in the top 5% of his class, earning him a membership into the National Honor Society. He was also a member of Lindblom’s Chess Club and chosen to become a member of the Senior Brothers Council. Ken was a proud graduate of the class of 1985, which served as a foundation for lifelong friendships.
Ken went on to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Marketing in 1989. His love for education led him to the prestigious University of Chicago, Booth School of Business, where he received a Masters in Business Administration with a focus in Finance. After earning his MBA at U of C in 1994, Ken became interested in Information Technology (IT). He enjoyed a successful career as an IT professional. Ken worked at CGI Technologies as an experienced Senior Consultant for more than twenty years.
Early in Ken’s career he relocated to New Jersey. During one of his trips home to visit his mother, he met the love of his life, Deborah Green, in the Newark, New Jersey airport. By the time they landed in Chicago, they realized they had many things in common. Ken’s intellect, along with his kind and gentle spirit, made a big impression on Deborah.
Ken and Deborah were married in 2004. They decided to expand their family and in 2010, were blessed with Connor Michael Cotton. Ken’s personal life expanded from devoted husband to Deborah to being super dad to Connor, a role he deeply cherished.
Ken loved jazz, house music and good Cuban cigars. An avid sports enthusiast, Ken liked all sports however he loved football and his beloved Chicago Bears. Annually Ken looked forward to helping his close buddies organize a tailgating event. They would start grilling food in the wee hours of the morning and head over to Soldier Field after hours of cooking and camaraderie. Ken was the “Founder and Commissioner” of the Fantasy Football League for twelve of his closest friends. He organized the annual drafts and kept everyone updated on rankings. Ken was known for picking great fantasy football teams and for getting his friends and family to participate in his annual Super Bowl football pool.
Ken shared his love for sports with Connor. He loved watching his son play football, run track, and excel at karate. They loved playing video games together. Ken and Connor also loved reading comic books together, acquiring quite a large collection of their favorites. He really loved doing any and all things with Connor: the apple of his eye, his heart and soul, and his “mini-me”.
Ken transitioned on Friday, February 15, 2019. He was a devoted husband and father. Ken leaves to cherish his memory, his beautiful wife Deborah, his wonderful and energetic son, Connor, his sister, Kimberly Lynn McDougal (Ken), mother-in-law, Elaine Green and a host of extended family and friends.
