Evelyn was born on August 22, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Annie Ruth Brown. Her formative years were spent with her grandparents Samuel and Mattie Malcolm. She attended Wendell Phillips High School and Jones Commercial Secretary School.
In 1946 she was introduced to the very charming tall, dark and handsome William “Bill” Matthew Knowles. The couple married February 14, 1947. Their union produced three children, Cynnthea, Patricia and William Knowles. Evelyn was widowed in 1966. Even with the challenge of raising three children she still had compassion for others, helping family and friends and feeding the homeless. She was a woman of faith and she prayed that if God would grant her a good job and a good husband she wouldn’t ask for anything more.
She landed a job with the United States Department of Agriculture and in 1966 was introduced to the extremely kind and handsome Julius Paul McWright. The two would later marry in October 1967.
She retired in 1995 from the United States Department of Health and Human and Services with almost 30 years of service. During her retirement she cared for her husband, Julius “granddaddy” until his death in 2007 and Annie Ruth Brown “grandma,” her mother until her passing in 2013. As Evelyn’s own health began to decline she was cared for by her beloved son, William and her grandchildren.
Evelyn Knowles McWright was called home at Warren-Barr on Thursday, March 29, 2018.
Left to continue her legacy are her three children, Cynnthea, Patricia and William (Vanessa), her seven grandchildren; Catherine (Rudy), Jonathan (Sunseria), Charlotte, Sharon, Kristine, Mark and Evelyn. Greatgrandchildren; Aja’, Tiffany Chante, Matthew, Armani, Patricia, Lauryn, Julius Jamaria, Deontae, Markayla, Markese, Victoria, Tiffany and William Christopher. Great greatgrandchildren; Arion, Savannah, Araianna, Joy, Gordon and Jayden.
