Gertha Jane Toussaint was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1927. She was the fifth child born to the union of Lucre Toussaint and Eugenie Lalanne and was raised by her loving older sisters, all who preceded her in death.
Gertha married Fritzner Saurel and had two children, Henry Leon and Phillppe Shannon. In searching for a better life for their children Fritzner and Gertha migrated to the United States. They settled in Chicago in 1970. In Haiti, while in her early twenties, Gertha was a third and fourth grade teacher. After many years Gertha retired from Halsted Terrace Nursing Home, currently called Symphony Rehabilitation Center.
Gertha enjoyed knitting and sewing. She was always a cheerful person who loved her family. She spent many hours lovingly counseling her family.
Gertha devoted many hours cleaning and decorating Our Lady Gate of Heaven Church. She loved beautifying the altar, especially at Easter time. Gertha’s greatest passion was serving as a Communion Minister at Mass. She served faithfully for years.
Gertha enjoyed watching basketball, the Olympics, especially gymnastics. Gertha was a BIG Steve Harvey fan, watching Family Feud always gave her such a big laugh. Art, Opera and TV Wrestling on Monday and Tuesday nights were also “Tante Tahta’s” pleasures. Gertha remembered birthdays, you could call her and ask when was someone’s birthday and she would always know the exact date.
Gertha is survived by her children, Henry and Phillppe Saurel, Sylvie Holt, Sybille Saintyl, Gina Saurel and Carine Jeudy, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
