Ileane R. Thomas, age 91, of Chicago, passed away at her home on July 10, 2018, surrounded by loving family. She was born in her parents’ home on Washington Park Court in Chicago, and was the second of three children. Ileane’s Jamaican-born parents, Edward and Lucenia Wiggan, and her sister, Lorraine Florindez, preceded her in death.
Ileane attended both Corpus Christi Catholic School and Willard Elementary School. She graduated from DuSable High School in 1944 and enrolled at Northwestern University.
Ileane married Roger D. Thomas on August 19, 1951 at Holy Communion Lutheran Church. Two daughters were born of this union, Karen and Cynthia.
For decades, she worked at the U.S. Department of Labor, retiring as a Supervisory Claims Examiner in the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.
Ileane loved world travel and culture. She was also passionate about musicals, theatre, dance, opera, classical music and her beloved bridge. She was a long-time member of the Saturday Afternoon Bridge Club.
Ileane regularly and faithfully attended St. James Lutheran Church until her declining health made it difficult to attend.
Ileane leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband Roger; daughters Karen (Simuel) Garrett and Cynthia Walker; grandchildren Rev. Christina Garrett (Keith) Klein and Clifton Walker; great-granddaughter Rachel Klein; sister Joyce (John) Morgan; sister-in-law Micheline Sterrett; brother-in-law Armando Florindez; her beloved cousin Bonita Jones; special niece Ghyslaine Marie Ivy; goddaughter Maryellen Drake; and many more loving and supportive cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
