Marilyn Hebron was born on April 1, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. She was born to parents Martha Pierce and Larry Mitchell, who both have preceded her in death.
Although she lived most of her life on the Southside of Chicago, Marilyn spent her childhood on the Westside of the city. She was proud of her Westside roots, and she was quick to remind family and friends that she was a true “Westsider.”
In 1965, Marilyn graduated from Farragut High School. As a student at Farragut, she was a member of the choir. She was an excellent writer and the ‘go-to’ person for writing papers and reports. Marilyn had a passion for journalism and culinary arts.
Marilyn worked at the United States Department of Veteran Affairs for several years before accepting a position at Cook County Hospital in September of 1975. There, Marilyn worked in the general medicine appointment system for her entire career. Her diligent work ethic was recognized and Marilyn was promoted to a supervisorial role for several years before retiring in 2003 with 27½ years of service.
In 1964, Marilyn met the love of her life, Donald Hebron. They were married on February 10, 1966. From this union, three sons were born, Derrick, Donald, and Christopher. With wedded bliss to Donald, Marilyn considered it a privilege to have also gained her first son, Terrence, who was two years old at that time. Marilyn was a dedicated wife and mother who had a boundless reserve for Donald and her boys.
Marilyn grew up in Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, pastored by Ernest Williamson. There, she served as a member on the Usher Board. Prior to her death, Marilyn faithfully attended Trinity United Church of Christ for several years.
Marilyn enjoyed the arts, was an avid reader, and loved to travel. Spending time with family and friends brought her sheer joy. She even devoted a few years as a caretaker to one of her grandchildren. Marilyn was a classy woman with a flair for sass and a good sense of humor. She was known for many good “one-liners.”
On August 23, 2018, Marilyn Hebron passed away in the comfort of her home.
Marilyn was preceded in death by sons Derrick and Donald Hebron, maternal parents Martha Pierce and Larry Mitchell; step-father Jesse Pierce, and sister Valerie Beckley. Her cherished memory will live eternally in the hearts of her loving and proud husband Donald, sons Terrence (Joan Brooks) Gardner and Christopher (Kawana) Hebron; sister Cheryl Wynn; brother Dwayne (Frances) Wynn; step – mother Mae Ollie Mitchell; uncle John Stewart; brothers-in-law Melvin Hebron and Jerome Beckley; sisters-in-law Delphine (Haywood) Criswell and Charlene (Garland) Smith, nephews Haywood Criswell Jr. and Pierre Wynn, nieces Tamika Walker, Cristal Walker, and Kamaria Beckley.
