Mary Maxine (Shultz) Little was born on July 3, 1940 in Hartford, Kentucky to Mary Louise Smith and Jessie William Shultz, whom both preceded her in death. She was their only child together. Mary’s brother William Shultz, granddaughter Denise McGhee, brother Willie Charles Brown, sister/cousin Juanita Curry and brother/cousin Bobby Rucker also preceded her in death.
Mary moved to Louisville, Kentucky with her mother at a very young age. She obtained her education in Louisville, Kentucky and received her high school diploma from Central High School. After high school she moved to Chicago, Illinois.
Mary was united in matrimony to Robert Little, who also preceded her in death. Mary had four daughters: Terry. Karen, Sharon and Shawn.
Mary worked various jobs before gaining employment with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office Department of Corrections. There she worked as a Supervisor of the Trust Department and eventually the Supervisor of the Commissary Department. She was employed with the County for twenty years and later worked for JCPenney as a greeter until her health began to decline.
After Mary stopped working in retail, she was dedicated to babysitting newborns and toddlers for friends and family. She took care of her last five grand-babies from their birth until they entered pre-school. She was a “spoiling” Grandma who always made sure that her house was stocked with all of their favorite treats and attended as many as of their events as she could.
Mary was an avid Bid Whist player. For over 25 years, she played monthly with her card party buddies: Mary Hughes, Carol Donley, Gwen King, Conzetta Robertson and Raymard Pitchford, who preceded her in death.
Mary accepted Christ at an early age and was always a praying mother. In 1992, she joined St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church where she served as president of the Superior Unit (Care Unit) and as a member of the Trustee Board. She would bake her cakes for church dinners and help out wherever needed. She attended various Christian Education classes/seminars and received numerous certifications and awards for her dedicated service. In spite of her health challenges she remained an encourager, a consistent tither and a big hugger to many.
The Lord’s will was done on September 29, 2018 when her journey on earth was completed. She now awaits her crown.
She leaves a powerful legacy of family to cherish her memory. Daughters: Terry Little Sanders, Karen (Terry) Little Gavin, Sharon Little and Shawn Little Murphy; six grandchildren Paden Sanders, Torry Gavin, Kendle Reed, Keith Gavin, Olivia Murphy and Raquel Murphy; one sister, Valarie Shultz Wilson; one step-sister, Toreatha Davis; one brother John Shultz; two cousins who were like a sister to her, Daisy Adams and Nellie Schultz; one Godchild Christian Brown Lowery; her favorite niece, Teresa Brown; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
