Melba Aulora Henderson Greene was born on December 14, 1921 in Bloomington, Illinois. She was the only child of Nellie J. Dice Henderson and Arthur J. Henderson.
Melba attended elementary and high school in Bloomington, IL. She studied music at Illinois Wesleyan and attended Illinois State Normal University (now Illinois State), where she met her future husband, and received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1943.
On July 30, 1943 she was united in holy matrimony with Eudell Herald Greene in Bloomington, Illinois.
Upon moving to Chicago, Melba worked for many years for the Supreme Life Insurance Company until the birth of her son. As a devoted wife and mother, Melba volunteered her time to various school and church activities and other causes. Once her children were older, Melba returned to the workforce as an Administrative Assistant for the Delena Day School in Chicago.
Throughout her life, Melba was an avid pianist and enjoyed all kinds of music. She was a life long learner and was always interested in many subjects, including the arts, current events, and especially black history. Melba enjoyed live theater and travelled extensively throughout the United States with her family. She pursued a healthy lifestyle, participating in various forms of exercise including gardening and working out which she did into her mid 90s. Melba had a charitable spirit and was always willing to assist and provide support when needed.
Melba peacefully departed this life on January 10, 2020 in the comfort of her home.
She leaves cherished memories in the minds and hearts of her son Arthur Greene and her daughter Linda Greene, her daughter in law Glynis Greene, her grandchildren Liana (Torey) McDowell, Cedric Berryhill, and Marca Rottnek, great grandchildren Amiya McDowell and Justin Louis Rottnek, her niece Ms. Shelia Davis and many extended family and friends.
