“So Come, my friends, be not afraid. We are so lightly here. It is in love that we are made in love we disappear.” -Leonard Cohen
Joyce Marie Johnson was born December 13, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the first, of four children, born to Clarence and W. Beatrice Johnson. Joyce departed this life at 1:05 p.m. on Monday, September 3, 2018.
After attending Manassas H.S., in Memphis, TN., Joyce graduated from St. Katherine of Siena high school. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in biology along with a minor in chemistry. Joyce also earned a post graduate certificate in computer science from DePaul University. She had various hobbies including, cooking, macramé, pottery, sewing…and was an avid animal lover.
Joyce was a joyous and innocent soul. Not being argumentative, she avoided conflict. Instead she focused her energy on cooking and animals and was a beacon of kindness. Even the dog her brother left at the house, Napoleon, sensed her vulnerability and was her designated “protector” from anyone ‘in or outside’ of the home!
She flourished at cooking. Producing exotic recipes that at times were “too exotic” for family. However, she continued feeding and being supportive of relatives near and far.
In the latter years, Joyce became a substitute teacher with the Chicago Public School System. Her students showed a fondness for her compassionate nature and she enjoyed exhibiting the “kinder side of humanity.” She accepted Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, near the end of her life.
Joyce Johnson was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Joyce’s gentleness will be greatly missed, tenderness from which all can learn.
Joyce leaves, to cherish her memory, her Mother: W. Beatrice Johnson, siblings: Cozetta Johnson, Omar C. Johnson, Sharon A. Johnson, and nephew: Damian Omar Benson, as well as a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
